The GMAT test is a standardized assessment and is designed to help Graduate schools of business assess the qualifications applicants for advanced study in business and management. It does not test specific knowledge attained through college course-work of achievement in any particular subject area or job skills or candidate’s knowledge of business.

It measures a student’s general verbal, mathematical, analytical writing and problem solving skills that are developed over a long period of time and are associated with success in the first year of study at graduate school of management all of which indicate an aptitude for management studies.

The GMAT examination consists of mainly three parts namely
(i) the Analytical writing assessment
(ii) the Quantitative section, and
(iii)the Verbal section.

The GMAT begins with the Analytical Writing Assessment which consists of Analysis of an issue and Analysis of an Argument. The candidate is allowed Thirty minutes to complete each one.

The quantitative section of the test measures basic mathematical skills, understanding elementary concepts and the ability to reason quantitatively, solve quantitative problems and interpret graphic data. The candidate will be allowed a maximum of seventy five minutes to complete the whole section.

The verbal section of the test measures the ability to understand and evaluate what is read and to recognize basic conventions of standard written English as well as advanced Reading comprehension skills, Critical Reasoning ability to grasp and sentence correction. Here also the candidate will be allowed a maximum of seventy five minutes to complete the entire section

The GMAT consists of seven separately timed sections each containing multiple choice questions. One of the seven sections contains trial questions needed for pre-testing and equating but they are not identified and appear in varying locations with in the test. You should therefore do your best on all sections. The total testing time is three and one half hour. In India, the GMAT tests are held four times a year.
