The GATE is conducted on All India basis on behalf of the National co-ordination Board and the Ministry of Human Resources development (MHRD), New Delhi by Six Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The purpose of GATE is to identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission into PG programmes ( M.Tech) at National level.

Examination:

Examination consists of two papers each of three hours duration.
First paper: Candidates are to select one of the two Groups SEA or SEB. Selection of a group is based on their qualifying degree.

Sections under group SEA:
Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Computational methods, Thermodynamics, Material Science.

Sections Under group SEB:
Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Agricultural sciences, Environmental Sciences, Plant Sciences, Micro-biology, Bio-chemistry, Human Physiology, Survey Specification and Building Economics.

Second paper: One discipline to be chosen out of option of 17 disciplines. Examination papers are set in the medium of English and the candidates are required to answer them in English only.

Result of GATE:

The result of GATE examination is declared in the form of Over-all percentile scores. Candidates who get less than 70 percentile get no score card. GATE scores are valid for 2 years. You may re-appear the GATE examination if you are not satisfied and the new score, in case it is better than the old one, will be used for admission purposes. Monthly scholarship as well as the arrival contingency grant is available.

Entry into Post-graduate courses:

With Assistantship/Scholarship, in Technology/Engineering/ Architecture/ Pharmacy at Engineering institutes/colleges in the country will be allowed to those who qualify in GATE. GATE is normally held on National basis during February.

Eligibility in to GATE:
For appearing in GATE, the candidates should (i) have obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy or Masters degree in Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications (with Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or in Science with Mathematics) or Professional qualification like AMIE (re-cognized by UPSC as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech) or
(ii) be in the final year of such programmes or
(iii) be in the second year or higher of the post B.SC. Four year Integrated Master’s programme in Engineering/Technology or
(iv) be in the Fourth or higher of Five year integrated Master’s degree programme in Engineering Technology.

This can be had from notified/specified SBI main branches on payment of requisite charges. It can also be had by post from GATE Offices on payment (inclusive of non-refundable Registration Fee) of requisite charges.
